Obituary

Tommy Gene Johnson, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Warsaw, Missouri, on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Born on August 21, 1937, in Holly Ridge, Louisiana, to Samuel “Roscoe” and Mary Ann (Tatum) Johnson, Tommy grew up in the region and graduated from Bastrop High School in 1955.

From 1956 to 1959, Tommy served in the United States Army. During his time in the military, he purchased his first guitar and taught himself to play by ear, embarking on a lifelong passion for music that made him the welcoming center of attention wherever he went. Following his honorable service, he began working as an ironworker for Metallic Building Company before entering the oil industry as a roustabout. Through hard work and dedication, he advanced to general manager and eventually founded his own business, TJ Oilfield Services in Berwick, Louisiana. He also successfully owned and operated a local feed store.

A gifted animal trainer, Tommy was particularly passionate about raising and showing cutting horses. In 1982, he achieved a World Championship with his five-year-old horse, Triangle Gold War. Always generous with his time, he frequently helped neighbors train their horses and took in animals that needed extra care. In 2002, he welcomed Jake—a quarter horse with a cleft palate—to his farm in Warsaw; Jake became a beloved companion and the gentlest horse for his grandchildren to learn to ride.

A dedicated congregation member, Tommy faithfully served Popular Baptist Church in every capacity he could until declining health prevented him from doing so.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William; and his stepsons, Dennis and Michael.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie “Jo” Johnson; his daughters from previous marriages, Judie Johnson of Gueydan, LA, and Ashlie (Jason) Judd of Warsaw, MO; his sister, Annette Croswell of Bastrop, LA; and his grandchildren, Mara, Perrie, and Marshall Judd. He is also survived by Jo’s children, Jessica (Robert) Pecoraro of Battlefield, MO, and Jason (Jennifer) Honea of Warsaw, MO; and grandchildren Ty Pecoraro of Kansas City, MO, Jacqueline (Daniel) Pecoraro-Biggs of St. Charles, MO, and Klarissa and Karina Honea of Warsaw, MO.

Tommy loved deeply, lived passionately, and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. May we cherish the warm memories and good times shared with him. Rest in peace—loving son, father, grandfather, husband, and friend.
